Any good, deep, well-drained soil. pH 5.5 to 8.0.
Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer according to label directions.
How much: Apply enough water to wet the soil 5 to 6 feet deep. To determine the proper amount of water for your soil, see How Much Water to Apply. Avoid wetting the trunk and crown of the tree by watering into a basin that keeps the water at least 4 feet away from the trunk.
How often: Water when the soil 6 inches below the surface is just barely moist.
Walnuts form on the current season's growth. Prune trees lightly, removing weak, diseased, or dead twigs and branches. Thin the inside of the tree if the growth is dense.
In the fall, the nuts drop to the ground. You may hasten nut drop by striking the branches with a rubber mallet or cloth-covered stick. After removing the husks, spread the nuts one layer deep in a shaded, well-ventilated location to dry.
